The Helix BT1 features the first system-on-chip (SoC) designed for headless intelligent systems from Intel. Formerly Bay Trail, the Intel Atom Processor E3827 processor and Intel Celeron Processor N2807 and N2930, delivers outstanding compute, graphical, and media performance while operating in an extended range of thermal conditions. These SoCs are based on the Silvermont microarchitecture, utilizing Intel’s industry-leading 22nm process technology with 3-D tri-gate transistors, which deliver significant improvements in computational performance and energy efficiency.
Highlights of the new SoC include high I/O connectivity, integrated memory controller, virtualization, error correcting code (ECC), and built-in security capabilities within a thermal design power (TDP) range of 5W to 10W.2
The N2807 and N2930 Intel Celeron SoCs, based on the same microarchitecture, are offered on Intel’s embedded roadmap. While they do not offer an industrial temperature range or ECC, they provide many of the same features and performance-per-watt benefits, making the Helix BT1 ideal for PC-like applications, such as thin clients, retail transactional clients, and digital signs.
Designed for headless operation, this small form-factor industrial computer excludes any externally accessible video output to prevent unauthorized users from tampering or modifying the operation of the onboard software or operating system. BIOS design features allow for autonomous operation eliminating the need for a human operator to maintain this system.
Target applications and uses include remote installations, network appliance systems, data acquisitions, industrial control systems, environmental monitoring, test and measurement, and automotive computing.
Hardware-Assisted Encryption and Decryption
Helix BT1 with the Intel Atom E3827 features support for Intel Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) New Instructions (AES-NI). Previously only available on higher end Xeon and Core processors, this technology is now available on the Intel embedded Atom E3827. Helix BT1’s hardware-assisted capabilities help secure endpoints, protect content and allow only chosen software to run on the device.
AES-NI allows the Helix BT1 to accelerate encryption and decryption and improve key generation and matrix manipulation, all while aiding in carry-less multiplication. Without concern for application performance degradation inherent in traditional cryptographic processing and provides enhanced security by addressing side channel attacks on AES associated with traditional software methods of table look-ups.
Auto Power-On and Auto Boot
Helix BT1 is designed for mission critical applications that require this system to be running 24/7, and remote installations where sending a technician out is not always feasible. Helix BT1 was purposely designed without an external power switch to eliminate the possibility of the system being turned off accidentally or maliciously. Instead, the BIOS has been designed to automatically power-on the Helix BT1 and boot up to the OS, when power is applied to the system. The only way to turn off the Helix BT1 is to remove power to the unit or do a soft shutdown from within the operating system. In the event of a power outage, the Helix BT1 is capable of powering back on automatically as soon as power is restored to the computer.
In addition to these features, the Helix BT1 has an onboard watchdog timer that can be used to reboot the system in case of a hardware fault or software error. This is especially useful in instances where the computer might not be easily accessible to human operators to reboot the system.
